| Artist Statement My work in ceramics consists primarily of wheel-thrown pottery. I am interested in making pottery which can be used regularly. I do not want people who use my pots to feel as though they are too fragile or valuable to use on a regular basis. I wish for my pots to become incorporated into the daily lives of those who use them. Many times I will alter the forms of my pots after they have been made on the wheel. I often use the wheel as a starting place for a particular form which can be manipulated. Working in this manner allows me to create pottery with unique features. It also provides a challenge to me as a potter to make a form that has been altered from its inherent circular shape while still maintaining a form that allows for practical function. My work is heavily influenced by architecture. I enjoy exploring how architectural structures can translate to pottery. A roof can become a lid for a jar. A chimney can become a spout for a pouring vessel or a neck for a vase. Having lived my entire life in Iowa, several of my forms are derived from agricultural and residential structures such as barns, grain elevators and houses. I work almost exclusively in stoneware, although I do work with porcelain on occasion. All of my work is fired in an electric kiln to cone 6 (approximately 2200 degrees F). All of my glazes are safe for food and drink. My work is also microwave and dishwasher safe. |
